Collaboration : les Dames de la Geste Arthurienne

Comme promis, voici le premier d’une série d’articles au sujet de ma première collaboration, projet qui me tient très à cœur. En plus de l’avoir trouvé très intéressant, il m’a permis de découvrir l’illustratrice Sarah Bertagna dont j’aime énormément l’esthétique.

As promised, here is the first of a series of articles about my first collaboration, a project that is very close to my heart. In addition to having found it very interesting, it allowed me to discover the illustrator Sarah Bertagna whose aesthetics I really like.

A l’occasion des Médiévales de Provins en juin 2019, Sarah Bertagna sortira un livre en hommage aux personnages féminins des légendes arthuriennes. Au moins 200 dames seront ainsi représentées !

On the occasion of the Médiévales de Provins in June 2019, Sarah Bertagna will release a book in tribute to the female characters of Arthurian legends. At least 200 ladies will be represented!

Pour compléter son ouvrage, Sarah Bertagna a demandé à des créatrices (professionnelles et amatrices) de réaliser des costumes d’après certaines de ses illustrations. Ces costumes figureront en annexe du livre sur les dames de la geste arthurienne et une exposition ainsi qu’un défilé auront lieu au festival Contes et Légendes à la Ferme le deuxième weekend d’août à Provins.

To complete her work, Sarah Bertagna asked designers (professional and amateur) to make costumes based on some of her illustrations. These costumes will appear in the appendix of the book on the ladies of the Arthurian gesture and an exhibition and a parade will take place at the Contes et Légendes à la Ferme festival  on the second weekend of August in Provins.

Mon choix s’est donc porté sur ce dessin.

So my choice fell on this drawing.

Toutes ses illustrations sont très belles, mais plus je voyais celle-ci, plus elle titillait ma sensibilité.

All her illustrations are very beautiful, but the more I saw this one, the more it touched my sensitivity.

           

J’ai approché ce projet en ne connaissant quasiment rien des légendes arthuriennes : en tout et pour tout quelques noms de personnages et de lieux 😟😅 

I approached this project knowing almost nothing of the Arthurian legends: in all and for all a few names of characters and places 😟😅

 

Il s’agit donc du personnage de Dandrane. Mon premier réflexe a été de chercher sur internet, ce qui ne m’a pas tellement éclairé. En résumé du peu que j’ai trouvé : "Dandrane : sœur de Perceval.". Très vague ! Et au gré de mes fouilles, j’ai trouvé les références de deux livres : La Quête du Saint Graal et Perlesvaus ou le Haut Livre du Graal.

It is therefore the character of Dandrane. My first instinct was to search the internet, which didn't really enlighten me. In summary of the little I found: "Dandrane: sister of Percival.". Very vague ! And during my excavations, I found the references of two books: The Quest for the Holy Grail and Perlesvaus or the High Book of the Grail.

Ceux qui me connaissent savent que je suis une grande fan de lecture. Ce projet a donc été également l’occasion de lire deux romans du XIIIe siècle.

Those who know me know that I’m a big fan of reading. This project was therefore also an opportunity to read two novels from the 13th Century.

Alors, pour commencer, petite (re)mise dans le contexte :

So, to start, a little (re)put in context:

 

Au Moyen-Âge, en occident, la religion était le christianisme.

A la cour du roi Arthur, le roi et ses chevaliers partaient à l’aventure pour prouver leur valeur et leur bravoure et entrer dans les bonnes grâces de Dieu. Merlin avait annoncé la dernière grande quête : celle du Saint Graal (et d’autres reliques liées à Jésus Christ). Le Graal est la coupe où a été recueilli le sang de Jésus une fois que son flanc a été transpercé par une lance. Seuls les trois meilleurs (et chastes/vierges) chevaliers pouvaient l’achever : Perceval, Bohort et Galaad (le fils de Lancelot du Lac).

In the Middle Ages, in the West, the religion was Christianity.

At the court of King Arthur, the king and his knights went on an adventure to prove their worth and their bravery and enter into the good graces of God. Merlin had announced the last great quest: that of the Holy Grail (and other relics linked to Jesus Christ). The Grail is the cup where the blood of Jesus was collected after his side was pierced by a spear. Only the three best (and chaste/virgin) knights could finish it: Perceval, Bohort and Gilead (the son of Lancelot du Lac).

Revenons-en à Dandrane :

Back to Dandrane:

-         Dans La Quête du Saint Graal, la sœur de Perceval n’est pas nommée. Lors de la Quête, elle donne des détails historiques aux trois chevaliers ainsi que des indications sur ce qui est à faire, tandis qu’ils voguent sur un bateau construit par le roi Salomon et envoyé par le Seigneur. Elle a également tressé un baudrier pour l’épée de Salomon, qui sera porté par Galaad, avec des fils d’or et ses propres cheveux.

In The Quest for the Holy Grail, Perceval's sister is not named. During the Quest, she gives historical details to the three knights as well as directions for what to do as they sail on a ship built by King Solomon and sent by the Lord. She also braided a baldric for Solomon's sword, which Gilead will wear, with golden threads and her own hair.

 

-         Dans Le Haut Livre du Graal, sa présence est plus importante. Pour sauver le château de sa mère, elle parcourt les royaumes à la recherche de son frère. Elle est également princesse et nièce de plusieurs rois, dont le roi Pêcheur qui garde le Graal, ainsi que d’autres reliques. Elle est aussi, avec Perceval, une descendante de Joseph d’Arimathie : le soldat romain qui a descendu le corps du Christ de la croix et l’a mis au tombeau. Enfin, il est dit qu’elle prie Dieu et sa mère et qu’elle est la seule personne à avoir eu en sa possession un morceau du Saint suaire (le drap qui a recouvert le corps de Jésus au tombeau).

In The High Book of the Grail, her presence is more important. To save her mother's castle, she travels the kingdoms in search of her brother. She is also a princess and niece of several kings, including the Fisher King who guards the Grail, as well as other relics. She is also, with Perceval, a descendant of Joseph of Arimathea: the Roman soldier who took down the body of Christ from the cross and buried it. Finally, it is said that she prays to God and her mother and that she is the only person to have had in her possession a piece of the Holy Shroud (the sheet that covered the body of Jesus in the tomb).

Dans d’autres textes, il a aussi été écrit qu’elle a été porteuse du Graal jusqu’à sa mort (elle est d’ailleurs représentée ainsi sur l’illustration de Sarah Bertagna)

In other texts, it has also been written that she was the bearer of the Grail until her death (she is also represented in the illustration by Sarah Bertagna)

Avec tout ça, Sarah Bertagna nous a donné quelques directives tout en nous laissant une bonne liberté, ce qui fait que le costume de Dandrane va être très intéressant à aborder du point de vue symbolique (couleurs, motifs, pierres semi-précieuses pour la tiare,…)

With all that, Sarah Bertagna gave us some guidelines while leaving us a lot of freedom, which means that Dandrane's costume will be very interesting to approach from a symbolic point of view (colors, patterns, semi-precious stones for the tiara ,…)
